Fascia, also known as connective tissue, is a scaffolding within our bodies. It is web-like, three dimensional, supportive throughout many systems of the body. It surrounds and protects our whole body – under the skin, around muscles, organs. It is interconnected and likened to a ‘single uninterrupted sheet’ and it is therefore equally responsive, so that issues affecting the fascia both under the skin and deep within the body, will have an effect on fascia on the surface and throughout the entire body and all of its systems. As such, this tissue is enormously effective both as a medium to address injury and pain, but also as a sensitive signalling system.
Myofascial Release has its origins in soft tissue work, as well as osteopathy, energy work and cranio-sacral therapy. It is an intrinsically intuitive therapy requiring a contribution both from the therapist and the client, so that each are able to assist the body to respond to the opportunity being offered for healing.
During a Myofascial Release therapy session, the therapist will apply pressure to an area of the body which has been perceived to be hot, tender or tight. It is a slow sustained pressure that, when applied together with open dialogue between the therapist and the client as a team, will lead to an optimal treatment outcome. Once the body has learned how to respond to this invitation to heal, the unwinding that follows can be enormously therapeutic not only in the relief of pain and discomfort, but also release on an emotional level. Therefore Myofascial Release is a tool that promotes healing on many levels.
It is possible that you will experience an increase in pain after your treatment. Please do not feel anxious about this. You will be experiencing a healing response and should sleep it off, awakening the following day free of pain and discomfort.
Myofascial release is unlikely to cause any worsening of your condition.
